About the dish

Om Ali, meaning “Ali's mother”, is Egypt's best-known dessert – warm, creamy and very simple. Broken pieces of baked puff pastry or thin ruqaq bread are mixed with nuts, raisins and desiccated coconut, covered with hot sweetened milk and baked under a layer of cream until the top browns. It is a little like bread pudding, but lighter and crisper on top. It is served hot, straight from the dish, often during Ramadan and at family gatherings.
