About the dish

Cha yen, “cold tea”, is one of the most recognisable drinks of the Thai street. Strong black tea, often a blend with star anise, tamarind or vanilla, is brewed in a cloth filter, sweetened with condensed milk and sugar, then poured over crushed ice and topped with evaporated milk. The trademark orange colour comes from ready-made Thai tea blends, which usually contain food colouring. The drink is very sweet, creamy and refreshing in the heat; the version without milk is cha dam yen.

Main ingredients

  • black tea
  • condensed milk
  • evaporated milk
  • star anise
  • ice

The “vegetarian” and “vegan” labels refer to the recipe shown, not to every version of the dish.

Thailand: Sold in the street in plastic cups or bags full of ice.
