Palau

Palauan food is built on fish and seafood from the lagoons and on taro, traditionally grown by women in wet patches; taro growing carries great social and ceremonial weight. Cassava, sweet potatoes, coconut and tropical fruit matter too. Japanese rule before the Second World War left a taste for rice, sashimi and miso soup, and the American era a fondness for tinned food and barbecues.
