About the dish

Pelēkie zirņi ar speķi is one of the most Latvian of dishes: large grey-brown peas cooked until tender and tossed with crisp fried bacon and onion. It is simple, cheap and very filling, and is traditionally washed down with kefir or soured milk. It has a special place on the Christmas table, but canteens and taverns serve it all year round, also as a snack with beer. Grey peas are an old variety grown in the region for centuries, quite different from ordinary split peas.
